Dear Journal: What Drains You, What Sustains You

Dear Journal,

I’ve been thinking a lot about energy lately — where it goes, how it feels, and how often we forget that it’s not limitless.

So many of us try to manage time, but forget to manage energy. We push through fatigue, keep saying yes, and then wonder why we feel flat or distracted. I’ve learned (both personally and through coaching) that thriving doesn’t start with doing more — it starts with noticing how you feel while doing it.

This week, I invited a client to do a simple “energy audit.” Two columns. One titled What sustains me, the other What drains me.

Within ten minutes, the picture was clear. Long meetings with no breaks — draining. Walks with her dog — sustaining. Saying yes to every request — draining. Quiet mornings with coffee — sustaining.

It’s amazing how quickly awareness creates clarity. Once you see where your energy goes, you can start making small, meaningful shifts — doing more of what fuels you, less of what depletes you.

Because feeling good isn’t selfish — it’s sustainable.

So maybe this week, try your own energy audit. Notice what lights you up, what weighs you down, and what you can shift to make life feel a little lighter.

Feel good and thrive,

Charley
